I have got to say that I am dissapointed with the quality of this album in cd and non-HDTracks download. Being a musician and an engineer I listened to this album very carefully. I first bought it as a digital download. Right from the very beginning I heard some distortion across the entire album and crazy compression. I popped it into my Pro Tools and sure enought crazy compression and clipping. So I went and bought the CD thinking OK bad conversion. It was exactly the same. Started to do some research and saw everyone raving about the version of the album on HDTracks. So i bucked up and bought the album for the 3rd time. Finally a version of the album that sounds correct. Distortion gone. Compression gone. Crisp and clear. I just wonder if the guys in the band have listened to the actual CD or the regular digital tracks or if they have just been listening to the HDTracks version. I find it har to believe that these guys who are obviously super thoughtful about how they craft their music would not be really upset that aside from the HDTracks their fans are getting a sub-par version of the album. It almost seems like it was mastered for the HDTracks then casually just downsampled and compressed without much care for everything else. I would find it hard to believe that Dream Theater would be so concerned with the Compression/Loudness game that most modern albums suffer from that they would allow the musicallity of their albums to suffer. The album is great...I just dont think that the majority of the fans will get to hear it be as good as it is.
