Victoria's Scream in "Finally Free"
March 06, 2013 6:41:29 PM UTC Post #1

Hi all, first time poster here!

I've looked through the available posts and can't find anything related to this.

At 4:32 in "Finally Free", directly after the gun shots, we hear Victoria screaming. Now, I'm about 90% sure this is a sampled sound from a film. Of course, I could be wrong.
Here's my reasoning. There's a film called "Hackers" (1995, starring Jonny Lee Miller and Angelina Jolie. See: Wikipedia for "Hackers"). During the film, at 12:40, a snippet of an old, black-and-white film is played. It shows a woman being strangled, and the scream she makes is the exact same as Victoria's. Seriously, check it out. It's pretty undeniable.
Now, IMDb claims that this snippet is a "clip of Stanwyck being killed (when Dade's angry at Kate)" from the 1948 film, "Sorry, Wrong Number". That's not the case. The visual image used in "Hackers" is actually from "Dead of Night" (1945) at approximately 50:45, during the "Haunted Mirror" sequence. However, the audio from the original movie is different when shown in "Hackers"

It's really driving me crazy. It is possible that the sound was originally recorded for "Hackers", and DT simply sampled it from THAT movie. I just don't know what to think.
If anyone can shed some light on this, I would be eternally grateful!

Cheers,
Michael =]

Hmmm. I"ll have to find a copy of the movie to check it out. I'm curious.

Another thing that I've always wondered about is that short section of samples in "Take The Time" right before the singing begins. The "C'mon" sound like Chuck D of Public Enemy. Not sure about the rest. Anyone know?

@Phrygian Sunshine:
Please look into it, for the good of my own health :P

I never thought about that actually. I'll look into "Take The Time" myself, and let you know if I find anything :)

@Phrygian Sunshine: "Hold it now..." is from Frank Zappa's song "Dancin' Fool"

Here's the list:
"Hold it now" - Beastie Boys: Hold It Now, Hit It (Heard at 0:00)
"Wait a minute" - Frank Zappa: Dancin' Fool (Heard at 3:26)
"Come on" - Public Enemy. Unfortunately, can't find anything on that as of yet. Most likely from a song from their album "Fear of a Black Planet". Problem is, Chuck D says it in every second song, so it'll be hard to track down the exact one :P

@Anorexemon:

Ah, good detective work! I've long wondered about that and now I know. Thanx!

There's also a quote from the film "Cinema Paradiso" later in the song. Excellent movie there...

@Phrygian Sunshine:

There is indeed! I'll have to give it a listen.

It turns out the scream is a well used sample in films etc., which would explain why it's in Hackers.
It's bound to be here or on a similar site. I'll keep digging. http://www.sounddogs.com/results.asp?Type=1&CategoryID=1033&SubcategoryID=24

@Febrilian:

That's exactly how long I've been wondering about that...

I've been wondering about that "Victoria scream" for a while too because I was sure I had already heard it in at least one movie. I just found out it was in 1933's original King Kong movie and the girl was Fay Wray. Can't be 100% that's the origin of that scream, but given the age of the movie and the "scream queen" status of the actress, it might as well just be...
