=Rkeister said:I agree with mangini, they don't out the time into listening to an album multiple times enough to rewire their brains for ten minute songs with so many time changes. my girlfriend used to tell me I had to worst taste in music and would try to make me turn them off in the car. behold four years of hearing them now being with me that long, she loves them. I took her to the concert last October and she couldn't wait for them to come back, so behold we will be doing m&g for second time in one year in July. In all fairness, I have met countless boys/men who were turned off by Dream Theater for not being catchy, or for writing long songs, or for being (this one makes me laugh) "too hard to listen to." Also, DT tends to attract fans who are musicians. That's what initiated my intrigue. Could this partially explain the gender disparity? |

@Tapring: I think your right Tapring, i used to play drums some years ago, and i am still a wannabe musician. i think many fans of Dream Theater are either Musicians or want to be Musicians. But i don't think that explains the large inbalance of male and female fans. Could it be.......................and dare i say it without sounding "sexist" that female fans go for the more attractive looking pop bands than those that you you have to sit down and listen to, i mean that there many attactive feamale pop singers, but I wouldn't buy their records. Is it different for most women? |

Well, back to the rewiring mangini mentioned...for someone who just listens and doesn't understand the theory behind it, its just uncomfortable since the timing just doesn't seem to flow to some. (especially people who listen to 4/4 bands all day.) Even not understanding much of music theory, a person can work to like their music. That's where the statement came about giving an album 5-10 listens. I don't think most chicks would put that much "work" into it. Most musicians don't need to put that "work" into listening to them, and can appreciate it from the start. That's the seperation. There are exceptions to everything though. I just feel that's where the womans connection drops off. We may be able to come up with a formula of songs in order for them to listen to starting with easier to listen songs that are less progressive (build me up, breeak me down.) and work towards the the insane songs like the dance of eternity to suck them in. |

Juuust to clarify......what you are describing is not a male/female disparity - it's a musician/non-musician disparity. I'm just mentioning that because you were making it sound like "females" don't instantaneously comprehend the music of Dream Theater, whereas "musicians" do. Reverse the roles where the comparison is between a female musician and a male non-musician and you would see the exact same phenomenon take place. As I stated earlier, I never found Dream Theater's music a challenge to understand or to like but cannot tell you how many men I have met who absolutely hated them for being too busy and complicated. |

Go to a Rush concert. Almost everyone attending are males. Rush themselves, have called their music' music for geeks'. Dream Theatre and Rush have somewhat similiar styles and those styles are complex and their music tends to take more than a single listen to truly enjoy. Maybe guys like the more complex and will give albums or songs more than 1 spin before they make a judgement.

I got my girlfriend into them! She loves them! I actually proposed to her right before the Austin meet and greet last October. Have tickets for back to back shows next month. |

Maybe guys like the more complex and will give albums or songs more than 1 spin before they make a judgement. There is a funny video on YouTube of a scene from "I Love You Man", I don't remember it in the movie, but Paul Rudd's and Jason Segal's character get backstage at a Rush concert and they are in Rush's dressing room. Then the guys from Rush are heading to their dressing room after the show and they're talking and Alex Lifeson says "I counted 7 females in the audience, that's a record for us!!!" But back to females at a DT show, one cool thing about being one of the few females at a DT show is when there's an intermission, there is hardly a line for the ladies room, but the line for the men's room is out the door and down the hall!!! I never see that at any other show, it's usually always the reverse!!! |

Is it different for most women? Maybe I've just been listening to DT for too long, but from a female's point of view, I think all the guys in DT are attractive in their own way, and I do mean all five of them(well, six because I'm also including MP here, too). I mean they aren't totally gorgeous, but I doubt they ever intended to make themselves out to be that way, it's all about the music. Although I have always considered JP very handsome and I've had a crush of JLB for 18 years!! Alot of it is their personality, too, that makes them attractive, and yes, I am also talking about JM!! |
